Ralph Lauren Takes a Bold Step: First Plus-Size Model Hired

All the controversy within the fashion world about size-zero models, unhealthy eating habits, negative body image and pressure to conform, has finally resulted in some positive developments. The high-end designer Ralph Lauren has joined the ranks of designers working with plus-size models by hiring Robyn Lawley.

The Australian plus-size model is a size 12 and towers over other models at 6 feet 2 inches. This is not the first time the 23 year old has worked in this industry; she first started modeling at the young age of 16. However, conforming to the standards of the industry that pressurized her to be skinny was too much for her to handle and she decided to move to France to concentrate on other pursuits.

On her return she saw that the industry was ripe for plus-size models and designers were already working with models that did not conform to the size profile that existed earlier. Robyn defied the odds when she got a coveted contract with Wilhelmina Modeling Agency and ever since then she has embraced her size and graced the covers of French Elle and Vogue Italia.

This move will boost the morale of other plus-size models within the fashion industry and get them the place they deserve within the business. Additionally, models like Robyn are great role models for aspiring models and young girls everywhere. Her message of being comfortable in your own skin and not conforming to narrow definition of beauty is one that needs to be heard more often.
